At the Sanbukan Dojo, the Youth Self Defense Program consists of ten rankings, encompassing five belt colors. Each level is carefully designed so that new techniques are built upon what has been previously learned, thereby ensuring a constant, fluid learning process.

By joining us, you enter the very special world of the Martial Artist, learning disciplines and techniques handed down over thousands of years. Not only will you train your body to defend itself, you will train your mind, spirit and soul to become strong in ways you never thought possible.

The Sanbukan System of self defense is based on the Aiki-Jujitsu principles established in the Far East many centuries ago. 'Aiki' means to harmonize and 'Jujitsu' suggests an overall defensive system. Together they define a defensive style in which fluid techniques defeat brute strength.

Our techniques are designed to turn an opponent's own power against himself. We try never to meet strength with more strength. We move away from, or around an attack, making it easy for us to control our attacker. Rather than striking an opponent, we seek to take away his balance. Once a person's balance is gone, he is easily defeated.

Therefore, at our Dojo you will not learn to break boards or do back-flips. However, you will learn how to not get hit, you will learn how to get away when someone grabs you, you will learn to use your elbows, knees and feet as effective weapons, you will learn how to neutralize and control most common attacks, and you will learn how to fight confidently on the ground.

One of our specialties at the Sanbukan Dojo is the introduction of Brazilian style ground grappling. At first glance, grappling looks like common wrestling. But it is much more. Just like in Aikido, Brazilian ground grappling techniques are not based on strength. The ability to dominate isn't determined by size, it is determined by technique. This allows a small man to overcome and control a much larger opponent. This can be very important at a young age where size differences can be extreme, even in the same age group.

There is no set time limit between each test. Students learn at their own rate.  The only criteria is that the student be proficient in all techniques for which he or she will be tested. The instructor will determine when a student is ready  to test.

There is a $10.00 fee for each test involving a belt color change (yellow, orange, green, brown).

White Belt - Signifies a new student.

Yellow Belt - At this stage, the student is learning basic fundamentals. These include falling, rolling, simple throws and grappling techniques.

Orange Belt - Now the student begins to learn escapes, evasions, takedowns and countering techniques.

Green Belt - At this level, the student learns advanced countering methods and sophisticated grappling techniques. Basic Aikido techniques are introduced at this time.

Brown Belt - Practical Aikido and advanced grappling are stressed during this stage of training. The highest level test for a Brown Belt student (third test) is exactly the same as a Green Belt in the Adult class.

There is no Black Belt available in the Children’s class.
